Irish Liquidators and a Question!

Some months ago I paid a visit to Irish Liquidators. It claims to be Ireland's most interesting store and I suspect they could be right. Their slogan is "Rugs to Rhinos"! It has everything including the kitchen sink!

They buy from pretty much anyone. From stores closing down to the guy walking in off the street who wants to get rid of something. It's a 'luck of the draw' kind of place but I usually find something to take home with me. Last time I was there I took away this vintage badminton racket in a frame which you should just be able to make out in this picture.

Mr. Auburn was a badminton player in his youth! Thought it was okay for €5 and could be nice hung on the wall at some point!? It actually has nice subtle colours to it, creams and mint green.

This little footstool however I hemmed and hawed over as long as I was there. It was €25 which I thought was a little steep as it had a wonky leg. But I have been looking for one to go with the leather chair in our sitting room for ages. In the end I took it home for €20. Its legs are a really good match with the chair and it is the perfect height.

On the way home in the car I had great plans to get some nice fabric and reupholster it and use some nice trim. Since its been home though, I'm not so sure. Or maybe I got lazy. The fabric kinda matches doesn't it? (Please ignore the weird blue colour the wallpaper goes in photos, it really is eau de nil, same as the lamp and the cushion!?).

Is it just too tatty to just clean it, tidy up the trim and leave as is or does it need a redo?? Be honest. What would you do?

  1. It is pretty the way it is, but it so hard to decide isn't it?

  2. It does match very well. I would put some new trim around the outside and it will look perfectly vintage. My best to you:)

  3. I actually love the worn colours the footstool has... Now, if you're asking what I would do. I would probably buy a pretty fabric and plan to redo the stool... The fabric would stay in a cupboard and the footstool would stay as is for years!

  4. Hi Jen,
I think I would give this sweet little stool a Re Love with some new fabric. It is pretty and shows it history but sometimes a little up lift is needed. I know if you leave it alone or re love it with new fabric it will be awesome. It has the cutest little legs ever!

  5. Hello Jen, I would carefully remove the fabric...it may be just a pretty on the back side. Some fabrics are thready on the reverse and some are smooth. I would be tempted to use the fabric for a little pillow and redo the footstool. Glad to meet you thru Kris' blog. Blessings to you and yours, xoxo,Susie

  6. I just love your blog, having found you through Kris's highlight! Just love your clean, simple, and chic style. About the footstool - hmm. Perhaps a bit of vintage trim around the edge of the stool would help out, if you are not up to redoing the whole fabric piece. Decisions, decisions, lol! Have a wonderful day!

  10. Jen,
I am so glad Kris invited you to be in her Saturday spotlight. I find you very endearing and your blog interesting and charming. Decisions are often difficult, I think I would leave your current fabric underneath and reupholster new fabric on top. That way you can always remove it and have the original again if you want.

  11. I will disagree with everyone! I like it as is, showing it's age and history. I think your instinct is right, to just trim off the strings, etc. I love your chair and pillows and wallpaper, too.

  13. I have to agree with Marci. The stool has so much character as it is and the colors work so well with what you already have. How nice to be in a position where you really don't have to do anything to it at this point and if you choose to change it later, you can. Vera's idea of recovering it with the existing fabric intact is a good idea. Whatever you decide to do, Jen, I know it will be fantastic. Love the stool with your fabulous wing chair. Oooh, I'd love to have that chair in my home. Lovely! xo ~ Nancy
